Pinsent Masons hires data and information law partner in London

Multinational law firm Pinsent Masons has hired data and information law partner Jaya Handa to join the firm’s Technology, Science and Industry (TSI) sector in its London office.

Jaya’s practice focuses on data protection with a particular emphasis on the insurance sector advising a range of clients including managing agents, brokers, reinsurers, cover-holders, risk engineers and loss adjusters. Furthermore, she has significant experience in managing large scale multinational data protection compliance programmes.

She has played an industry-wide leadership role via her work with the Lloyd’s Market Association, International Underwriting Association and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority, producing widely used insurance privacy templates and documentation.

Jaya returns to Pinsent Masons where she completed her training contract and worked as a data and information law solicitor, before moving in-house to insurer Liberty Specialty Markets in 2016, where she built and led the privacy team.

Head of Pinsent Masons’ Technology, Media, and Telecoms, Jonathan Kirsop, said: “Jaya will provide an excellent skillset backed up with knowledge and in-house experience in data law with a unique expertise in the financial services sector.

“Her presence in the team will bring significant value and will enable us to respond to an increased demand from clients for data-related advice across all sectors. This will be an asset following changes in the GDPR legislation, proposed post-Brexit reform to the data protection regime, and the fast pace of technology and market developments generally.”

Jaya’s appointment follows recent lateral partner hires in the TSI sector with Kristina Cornish and Eleanor Ludlam joining the firm in London in February and March 2023. The firm also recruited Martin Hayward in Dubai in August 2022 and Joni Henry in Sydney in October 2022.

Commenting on her appointment, Jaya said: “It’s a real pleasure to come back to Pinsent Masons, after developing in-house experience at a time where data protection is top of the agenda for all businesses. I am proud to join a purpose-led firm, which aligns with my personal values and to be part of the team again.”
