Pinsent Masons advised Zenobē on 300MW/600MWh battery storage project

Multinational law firm Pinsent Masons has advised international EV fleet and battery storage specialist, Zenobē, on the development, construction and operation of a 300MW / 600MWh transmission connected battery energy storage project to be situated at Kilmarnock South, near Glasgow.

The project is the second major investment of a large programme of battery storage assets in Scotland, representing a major step forward in innovation by providing over 1GW of storage and is estimated to decrease consumer bills by £1 billion over 15 years.

Expected to be operational by 2025, the batteries will provide a wide range of grid services to ease constraints on the electricity network by storing electricity at times of peak renewable generation and releasing it when needed. The project will ensure network demand and consumer cost expectations are met.

The multidisciplinary Pinsent Masons team was led by Project Financing Partner, Apicksha Patel and Energy Projects Legal Director, David Trethowan supported by team including Lynne Davy, Michael Duffy, Natasha Kay, Samira Mir, Graham Wallace, Susan Henretty and Vikash Vaitha.

Commenting on the transaction, David Trethowan said: “We are thrilled to have collaborated with the Zenobē team to deliver this cutting-edge battery energy storage project. Once operational, the services provided by the project will facilitate the continued expansion of renewable generation and stabilise the grid, enabling the United Kingdom to achieve its net-zero goals while also enhancing our energy security.”

James Basden, Co-Founder and Director at Zenobē, commented: “Reaching this significant milestone demonstrates Zenobē’s commitment to stopping the waste of wind power by doubling Scotland’s battery storage capacity. Kilmarnock South will enhance the country’s position as a leader in delivering energy that is cost-effective, clean and efficient. We are pleased to have worked with Pinsent Masons on yet another ground-breaking project”.
